Why the Wild Goose?
Because apart from the Wild Goose there is no life.
The Wild Goose was a term that the ancient Celts had for the Holy Spirit.
From the first time I heard this it stirred something in my heart. Yes, there is a wildness to the Holy Spirit. The dominant images of the Holy Spirit are a meek dove or a flickering flame of a candle, both of which are in one way accurate. But the Holy Spirit is more than that. God’s Spirit is power and blows not merely like a gentle breeze but at times like a raging wind. Sometimes, this power makes us nervous. We like the idea of the Holy Spirit as a flame on a candle but a raging fire often causes anxiety. Our first instinct is to get it under control. It’s hard to control a wild goose; believe me, I know.
In the 19th Chapter of Acts, St Paul meets a group of disciples who “have never heard of the Holy Spirit” (v.2). I’ve long been convinced that too many people today have the same sentiment as the people St. Paul encountered. Sure, perhaps most have heard something of the Holy Spirit, but their experience of the Holy Spirit is very limited. The idea of God wanting us to encounter the Holy Spirit, to have a relationship with the Holy Spirit is a foreign concept for far too many people.
The Wild Goose Project is a simple attempt to invite Catholic Christians into a more profound life giving relationship with the Holy Spirit. This is a relationship marked by the love of God which breathes life into our daily existence. The Holy Spirit is not merely something relegated to Confirmation but the Spirit desires a relationship with us that will take us on the greatest adventure imaginable; a journey to the very Heart of God. The Holy Spirit desires to be present to us in a manner that brings light out of darkness, freedom out of bondage, order out of chaos and life out of death.
Such is the power of the Wild Goose.
The Ministry of the Wild Goose and Team
The Ministry of the Wild Goose
The Ministry of the Wild Goose is a part of Franciscan Pathways, a non-profit outreach of the Franciscan Friars of the Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Third Order Regular. The Ministry of the Wild Goose works in partnership with 4PM Media, a Catholic media company, to produce resources that will enhance your journey.
The mission of The Ministry of the Wild Goose is to invite men and women to an encounter, or a renewed encounter with Christ who perfectly reveals the love of the Father by the grace of the Holy Spirit.
To effectively live out this mission, there are three guiding principles that operate in all that we do:
Beauty is incorporated throughout all of our projects because God’s goodness and glory is striking in its beauty, and hearts can be moved when confronted by that which is beautiful.
The Kerygma and the call to conversation is another operating principle. It provides a foundation in all we do because God has created each of us in His image and likeness, and we are perfectly loved without condition despite our sin and disobedience that separates us from His love. Jesus Christ came to earth to reveal His Father to the world. His death, resurrection, and sending of the Holy Spirit restored our dignity and brought us back to God.
And finally, we hope to engage the individual through authenticity and relevance.
4PM Media produces projects that are effective catalysts to encounter, awaken, and inspire. They produce films and other media projects aimed at bringing people into an encounter with God. This encounter awakens them more deeply to the truth of His love and inspires them to action in their faith. 4PM works with ministries, organizations, and businesses, as well as creating our own content through documentaries and short films. It is their belief that visual beauty and quality story telling express fundamental truths that are natural to the human experience.
The creative team at 4PM Media is an integral part in what we do at The Ministry of the Wild Goose. We could not produce the beautifully filmed and edited images or share our stories as beautifully without their expertise.
The 4PM Media team has partnered with The Ministry of the Wild Goose to produce:
The Wild Goose Series
Sign of Contradiction — The Life of St. Francis of Assisi
Metanoia — A follow-up series to The Wild Goose
