WHO:  Everyone!

Here are a few things that will help make your Vigil gathering a graced and powerful event:

  • Scripture – Obviously there is great power in the Word of God.  If you are not sure what to read then just read the readings from Pentecost (Acts 1:1-11; 1 Corinthians 12:3b–7, 12–13; John 20:19-23). Another beautiful reflection might also be the Pentecost sequence, Veni Sancte Spiritus, which is a very powerful prayer.
  • A prayer of commitment to Christ and prayer to the Holy Spirit.  This is a wonderful opportunity for you to once again renew your commitment to the Lord.  I've provided a very simple example, but feel free to use your own:
    • “Lord  God, I come to you this evening knowing that I have done wrong.  I have sinned against you and my brothers and sisters.  I  turn  to  you  and  turn  away  from  sin. [Pause.  Silently  ask  forgiveness   for  anything  you  know  is   keeping  you  from  God.] Jesus,  please  be  the  center  of  my  life. This evening I choose you as the Lord  and Savior  of  my  life.  Jesus, fill me with your Holy Spirit, baptize me in your Holy Spirit and may I experience the Grace of Pentecost.   Allow me to  live  as  a  child  of  God.  Thank  you  for  hearing  my  prayer  through Christ  our  Lord.  Amen.”
  • Praying with one another. Take the opportunity to pray with each other; don't miss this chance to pray WITH each other, not just FOR one another.  If you are a large group, then break into small groups and see that each person is able to be prayed with.
    • This does not have to be complicated, begin by calling on the Holy Spirit. Ask the Spirit to pray through you, then pray for God's outpouring of Grace on the individual.

These are just a few elements that could be in your Vigil, but again, what is most essential is simply gathering and praying for God's Spirit.
